A diesel pusher, like those made by Newmar, is an RV that has a diesel engine located in the rear, as opposed to the more typical diesel puller, in which the engine is located in the front.
There are a few reasons used diesel pusher motorhomes are valuable. First, diesel pushers typically mean more power. With diesel puller motorhomes, the engine has to pull all the weight behind it, which is especially difficult if you plan on regularly traveling on uneven terrain.
If the engine is located in the rear, power transfers more quickly between the engine and the axle via the drive shaft. This means diesel pushers are great for vehicles that are particularly long (35+ feet) and heavy; in longer vehicles with diesel pushers, power won't be lost transferring across a lengthy drive shaft. The result? Greater torque and more towing capacity!
Today's diesel engines are much more fuel efficient than we usually assume (and much less smelly, too!) This is why used diesel pusher motorhomes can be a smart buy: even though maintenance of a diesel engine is more expensive than a gas engine, they are typically more durable. Diesel pushers, especially, don't have to work as hard as diesel puller engines, so they tend to last longer.
Also, diesel pushers often have more spacious interiors than diesel pullers, because no interior room has to be sacrificed to make room for the engine!
If you're looking for an RV, consider checking out diesel pusher motorhomes. You'd be surprised at how much you can save if you're looking for a long-term purchase!
